Dr. Dean Smith studied human biology at the University of Guelph, and then went on to complete a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Toronto. While still in Toronto, he completed his residency in ophthalmology and was named a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1989.

Dr. Smith was initially trained in laser vision correction in 1994 and has been under the tutelage of some of the leading refractive surgeons in the world since that time. He has extensive experience with several different excimer and femtosecond laser platforms, including custom ablation, All-Laser LASIK and topography-guided laser vision correction. Dr. Smith also has extensive experience with procedures involving different intraocular lenses, including reading vision and astigmatism correcting implants.

Dr. Smith was previously on-staff with Trillium Health Partners' ophthalmology division for 30 years. He's currently the co-medical director at TLC Laser Eye Centres' Oakville location.

During his time as a medical student, Dr. Smith was the recipient of several awards, including the J.E. Casson Imperial Award and the Dr. Frederick J. Colling OBE Memorial Scholarship. His work has appeared in publications such as the British Journal of Ophthalmology and the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Smith was also the first surgeon in Canada to insert an astigmatism correcting implant.
