Educational background

Dr. Ike Ahmed obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Toronto in 1995, going on to then finish a residency in ophthalmology with University of Toronto-affiliated hospitals, and an additional medical and surgical internship with these same hospitals. He then completed a fellowship in glaucoma and anterior segment at the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center.

 

Refractive experience

In addition to his duties as surgeon and co-medical doctor at TLC Laser Eye Centres’ Oakville location, Dr. Ahmed also sees patients at Prism Eye Institute, Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga and the William Osler Health Centre in Brampton. Due to his extensive expertise in multiple areas of ophthalmology, Dr. Ahmed is regularly asked to consult for a variety of industry manufacturers and aids in the development of new platforms, devices and technology.

Dr. Ahmed also devotes part of his time to teaching. He is an assistant professor with the University of Toronto’s Department of Ophthalmology and is a clinical assistant professor with the University of Utah’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

 

Accomplishments and awards

Dr. Ahmed has been the recipient of numerous awards and various honours, including the 2014 Binkhorst Medal from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (for outstanding contributions to the understanding of the practice of cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantations), the 2014 Innovator Award from the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and the 2013 American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award for substantial contributions made to the Academy, its scientific and educational programs and to ophthalmology.

He also actively contributes to research in the realm of ophthalmology. Dr. Ahmed’s work has appeared in publications such as Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
